God wants us to be well and healed. Let’s talk about trauma and soul wound healing.
Trauma Healing
I think of trauma and chronic stress as gateways to dealing with chronic dieting, restrictive eating, bingeing, etc.
Many times this happens when we are in a state of dissociation. If you’re not familiar with that term, think of it like this : Dissociation is when we know how to follow our diet plan, we know we need to distance ourselves from certain people, we know all the ‘right’ things to do but when we’re triggered by stress or our traumas and we go beyond our capacity, our cognitive brain goes offline. This causes us to be unable to access the tools that we know.
Now, it’s normal to check out from time to time when we reach capacity. It’s also normal to have a stress response to a stressful situation. I’m not talking about that. I’m referring to when our situation doesn’t line up with the emotions that we are having or if we are dissociating or ‘checking out’ all the time or more often than not.
Many people have been through really hard stuff. So when do we know when we’re experiencing trauma and wounds?
When you don’t diet and you feel a lot of emotions. When you don’t binge and you feel that you’re going to crawling out of your skin. When you don’t chronic exercise and you feel that you’ll crawl up the walls. It can also look like scrolling or checking out.
These are all possible signs that you may have unprocessed traumas.
If you don’t deal with your soul wounds – the things that separate you from God – we will reach for other things as a release valve. But here’s the truth…
When our trauma and soul wounds begin to yell loudly at us, we can find safety in our relationship with the Lord.
