It can be overwhelming to begin to break away from diet culture, what other people think we should do, etc. Many times it requires us to unlearn and re-learn language.
Most people that I have talked with would agree and confirm that amongst believers, it’s still hard to tell if that individual is a believer based on how they talk about food and other people’s bodies.
This is unfortunate but also, not surprising. We are a multi-generational culture of individuals who worship and value being thin. Because of this, in my practice, we spend months and years renewing our minds. We challenge our thinking every hour of every day.
The reality is : this isn’t what God says about weight.
Our rejections and fears become ways of livening that make us afraid of people. This is why we attach ourselves to things like diet culture as a way to circumvent those fears and rejections.
So what do we do about our health if we’re not looking to be obsessive (i.e. a part of diet culture)?
We are called by God to eat of the variety of food that He has given us on earth. He has given us the ability to taste and smell and to have an appetite for different types of food.
Eat a variety of food regularly to learn what hunger and fullness feels like.
Recognize that sometimes we eat for practicality and because we need sustenance. Sometimes we eat for pleasure and the beauty and community that can be found at the table. It all fits together and works.
